The Virginia Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act empowers crime victims "to ensure that the full impact of crime is brought to the attention of the courts of the Commonwealth . . . that crime victims . . . are treated with dignity, respect and sensitivity . . . and that their privacy is protected."
When representing victims of crime including victims of sexual assault and protective order violations, the goal has been to ensure that clients understand and pursue their legal rights in the criminal process and are fully aware of the resources available to them at the state and federal levels. Victims of crime may have basis to pursue a non-criminal lawsuit directly against those who are responsible for their injuries.
